Central or East Java, Indonesia origin late 18th - 19th Century

The lamp was used in Wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances. The body of the bird burned coconut oil and was suspended over the puppeteer's head behind the screen on which the puppets' shadows were projected. This magnificent Garuda bird were an essential part of the Wayang kulit performances, it is the form  of a mythical bird.

Cast from brass the Garuda has waves of feathers from the wings and tail. The garuda has a large thick beak with serrated edging, looking like teeth, and a winged crown. The garuda rests on clawed feet

One similar has been displayed in the British Museum.
